The Debate Between Manual and Automatic Transmission Cars

With advancements in car engineering, more vehicles today use automatic transmissions as opposed to manual transmissions. Motorists often debate between the two options in an attempt to determine which is the better choice.

As manual transmission vehicles continue to become rare, drivers are noticing the incredible benefits they offered in terms of fuel efficiency, durability and high performance while on the road. So what makes a manual transmission vehicle stand out from its automatic counterpart?

Easier maintenance and repair

Manual transmissions are typically easier to maintain and repair. They are much simpler in their design, meaning that fewer issues are likely to be experienced with the transmission over time.

In fact, one of the few problems that could arise with a manual transmission is the clutch. When properly maintained by a mechanic, the clutch can last for many years without breaking down.

More control to the driver

Manual transmission vehicles give more power and control to the driver. You can determine how quickly you want to change gears while on the road, and you also learn how to pick up on any operational issues with the car. Most automatic transmission drivers rely too much on sensors and devices in their vehicle, and these are not immune to failure.

Engine oil is a more durable than transmission fluid

Manual transmissions use engine or gear oil to lubricate the transmission mechanism. Automatic transmissions use an automatic transmission fluid for the same purpose, but it is not as durable or effective as engine oil.

While transmission fluid often needs to be changed after a certain number of kilometres travelled, engine oil for manual vehicles doesn't need to be changed as often.

Better fuel efficiency

Manual transmission vehicles are more fuel efficient than their automatic counterparts. Automatic vehicles tend to lose some fuel efficiency from the torque and hydraulic pump within the transmission system. You can therefore save on fuel costs over time when driving a manual vehicle.

Most manual transmission vehicles are also cheaper than their automatic counterparts because demand for them is not high. You can get a competitive price on a brand new or used manual transmission vehicle.

Reduces likelihood of theft

As manual vehicles become less common on roads, fewer thieves and other threats will be able to drive your car. This decreases the likelihood of your vehicle being stolen if you frequent unsafe neighbourhoods. You also minimise the need for people borrowing your vehicle because they probably don't know how to drive it.
